ICCROM continues to have a strong presence in Asia and the Pacific thanks to longstanding and effective partnerships. Its ongoing collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) of the Republic of Korea has enabled ICCROM to continue pursuing cooperation for education, training and research in cultural heritage conservation in the region. As a result, the CollAsia programme for the conservation of collections in Southeast Asia has moved forward with new activities. ICCROM continues to address the capacity-building needs of the Asia Pacific region in all aspects of heritage conservation, with objectives of promoting heritage as a contributor for sustainable development in the region and around the globe.

Thanks to its close collaboration as well as generous funding and secondment provided by the Japanese authorities ICCROM is able to offer collaborative projects based on Japanese expertise on seismic retrofitting and reinforcement solutions that protect human life while also preserving historic structures, as well as holistic knowledge and experience of Japanese paper and Japanese traditional conservation approaches and techniques.

Now available for the first time – explore the Cultural Heritage for Inclusive Growth (CH4IG) UK-Southeast Asia Collaboration projects! These projects are some of the many grassroots initiatives taking place in the region. The insights from these case studies have contributed to an expanding knowledge base that will influence future initiatives, policies and interventions.

Once, the search and rescue operations were over, the work of salvaging the historic timber fragments and wooden carvings of Kahstmandap was undertaken with the aim to restore the building, which continues to be a center for several religious and cultural activities.  

INSARAG-UNESCO-ICCROM issue guidelines for urban search and rescue at heritage sites

In 2018, UNESCO, INSARAG-International Search and Rescue Advisory Group, ICCROM and ICOMOS-ICORP Türkiye began a formal collaboration with the aim to enhance interagency cooperation and coordination for heritage safeguarding during urban search and rescue (USAR) and also as part of the ‘flexible response’ given by USAR teams upon request of the authorities of the host country.

On 15 June 2023, we signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Korea National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH), led by Director General Kim Yeonsoo, under the aegis of the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA). This five-year agreement will allow us to expand our efforts with the Republic of Korea to conserve and manage cultural and natural heritage.

On 15 and 16 June, we welcomed Director General Kim Yeonsoo of the Republic of Korea’s National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) and a delegation of NRICH conservation scientists to ICCROM headquarters. The visit's purpose was to discuss areas to strengthen collaboration between ICCROM and NRICH and sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
