Heritage Place Lab (HPL), a new activity focused on strengthening networks across research and site management in the context of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

It offers a World Heritage-specific methodology of management effectiveness assessment that can be applied to cultural, natural and mixed sites.  

The Guidance and Toolkit for Impact Assessments in a World Heritage Context is the go-to reference that explains the process for achieving these goals. Offering practical tips and tools including checklists and a glossary, it provides a framework for conducting impact assessments for cultural and natural heritage sites.

How can Traditional Knowledge Systems be applied and adapted to contemporary conservation and management of heritage? This question was discussed during the 2015 ICCROM-CHA International Forum on Conservation. The results are now available in this new publication, which looks at examples from 14 countries across Asia.

Authenticity is a nebulous term within the conservation profession. The concept has historically tended to privilege materials-based approaches to conservation practice over recognizing spiritual and non-material values of a place, however, the drafting of the Nara Document in 1994 marked a shift in paradigm. Considered an important moment in the history of conservation, the Document expanded the concept of authenticity and drew attention to cultural diversity within the heritage discourse.

World Heritage Leadership is a new capacity building programme of ICCROM and IUCN with a unique people centred-approach to the integration of nature and culture, finding innovative ways to enhance the management practices of heritage through the work of the World Heritage Convention.

Around the world, religious sites dominate the lists of protected heritage properties. As a result, the needs of a community, who regard these spaces as functional and sacred, must be balanced with the demands of heritage conservation practices and site management.

This guidance note begins with a brief discussion on people-centred approaches to heritage conservation. This is a discussion that has been taking place for some time but involving community members still remains a real challenge at many heritage places.

ICCROM, ICOMOS, IUCN and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre have jointly published a new title within the series of World Heritage Resource Manuals: Managing Cultural World Heritage.

The second in the series of management guidelines and manuals for World Cultural Heritage (see also Feilden/Jokilehto), this volume addresses the issue of risk preparedness in both general and specific terms.
