African Academics to meet in Italy to Discuss Sustainable Development through the Lens of Heritage Conservation

African Universities Rectors Conference

On 21 June 2019, the city of Teramo, Italy, will be the setting of a lively debate between the rectors of African Universities and cultural heritage experts, to define new ways to promote the protection of cultural and natural resources on the continent.

African Universities Rectors Conference

The conference, entitled “Protection of cultural and natural heritage and resources through prevention: current and new professions” will unpack the concept of prevention as a tool for development: how this translates in the academic world and on the ground, and what it means in the African context. With universities on the front line for shaping the next generation of experts, they are in a prime position to advocate for innovation in protecting heritage resources, but also using heritage to create opportunities and provide wellbeing to communities.

“With youth now making up for more than half the population in Africa, we as places of learning need to be ready to give students the tools they need to care for their cultural and natural environment, and make a living from it in the most sustainable way,” says Webber Ndoro, Director-General of ICCROM.

This one-day event will take place during the “II International Forum of Gran Sasso,” a large multidisciplinary event in Teramo for University and research experts from across Europe.  This event is organized by ICCROM (the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), together with the University of Teramo and the Diocese of Teramo-Atri, under the auspices and financial support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Dr Ndoro will present the African Universities Rectors Conference to the Italian Senate in Rome on Monday 10 June.
