In addition to a group of Chinese participants, an international group of participants will be selected by ICCROM. This course is a follow up to three successful courses on “Management and Monitoring of World Heritage Sites with special reference to China” organized and implemented 2011, 2016 and 2017 on the invitation of SACH.

THE COURSE

Macao SAR has been a lucrative port of strategic importance in the development of international trade in Chinese territory. The Historic Centre of Macao was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005, and presents a group of 22 principal buildings and public spaces that enable a clear understanding of the structure of the old trading port city. With its historic streets, residential, religious and public Portuguese and Chinese buildings, the Historic Centre of Macao provides a unique testimony to the meeting of aesthetic, cultural, religious, architectural and technological influences from East and West.

The course aims to provide participants with current thinking, trends and approaches to management of cultural World Heritage properties, focusing particularly on monitoring. Course contents are currently being developed and will include the following themes:

  1. International context of conservation: current trends and approaches to planning and management of heritage sites
  2. Management of World Heritage properties
  3. Achievements, challenges and strategies for the protection of World Heritage properties in Macao SAR and mainland China
  4. Monitoring
