Brief Description of the Programme

Records and archives are important assets to ICCROM, helping in decision-making and providing evidence of daily activities for ICCROM accountability and transparency. The Records and Archives Office helps manage records at each stage of their life cycle, while providing external users with access to archival material. Interns in the Records and Archives Office will be able to learn and contribute to increasing users' accessibility to our archival resources.

Purpose of the Role

Under the supervision of a staff member, the intern is called upon to provide assistance aimed at enhancing the overall activities of the chosen Service. More specifically, the intern shall contribute to the following:

  1. Arrange and describe ICCROM archival series, including paper records, photographs and/or audiovisual material, using web-based archival description software.
  2. Perform basic preservation activities, such as re-house records in protective enclosures and removal of damaging plastic bags, paper clips, staples or rubber bands.  
  3. Other archival tasks as required, including digitization of records.

Learning Goals

As a capacity-building organization, our aim is to offer interns the unique opportunity to assist our staff on international projects, meet other interns and research fellows, interact with heritage professionals from all over the world and stimulate their intellectual curiosity. In particular, the intern will have the following learning goals:

  1. To master archival processing, establish physical and intellectual control over records to facilitate their access.
  2. To master a standards-based archival description software.
  3. To develop self-confidence in doing relevant archival tasks, including conservation practices.
  4. To improve management skills, stay organized and complete assignments.

Required qualifications:

Education

  • University degree.
  • Certification in archival studies.

Previous experience

  • Experience in archival processing and other archival tasks. 

  • Use of archival description software.

Skills and knowledge

  • Knowledge of archival description, including archival management systems, metadata standards, preservation, digital asset management, and other archival functions, including records management.

  • Communication skills to share and engage with colleagues and stakeholders. 

  • Collaboration and teamwork skills to work effectively with others: embracing change positively, encouraging open dialogue, being a behaviour model, staying curious, and inviting healthy debate.

  • Flexibility skills to adapt to change, adjust quickly and undertake varying tasks.

Languages

  • Working knowledge of English.

  • The knowledge of other languages, such as French and Italian, is an added advantage.

Remuneration

Your round-trip travel costs to and from Rome, your living costs, including accommodation, and any other expenses, will not be covered by ICCROM.
