On 25 September 2015, the UN Agenda 2030 was signed by 193 Member Countries, marking a pivotal moment in the drive to create a better and more sustainable future for all. As of 2023, we are at the midpoint of this journey.

Despite the global community's efforts, the 2023 UN SDG Summit acknowledged that progress has been insufficient, calling for accelerated and cooperative action at all levels to meet the 2030 targets. The Summit highlighted culture's critical role as an enabler of sustainable development, a point reinforced in the 2024 UN Pact for the Future, which emphasised integrating culture into broader policies to enhance SDG implementation.

Sectors across the globe, including cultural heritage, have adopted the SDGs. But there is an urgent need to step up these efforts. Cultural heritage has immense potential to contribute, through strengthening social cohesion, promoting equitable climate action, and supporting sustainable economic development. Yet, its role in addressing global challenges remains underutilized due to limited cross-sectoral engagement and lack of awareness about its broader contributions.

In response to the UN’s call for action, ICCROM invites you to a webinar on 31 October to explore how cultural heritage can drive sustainable development.

The event will focus on heritage’s alignment with the ‘5Ps’ of the SDGs: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership, and discuss strategies to unlock heritage’s potential through practical models for leveraging heritage for social and environmental change, promote cross-sectoral collaboration, and ways to integrate heritage into broader development policies.

Themes

1. People: How can heritage promote social inclusion, and empower marginalized communities?

2. Planet: How does heritage support environmental sustainability and climate resilience, particularly through traditional knowledge systems?

3. Prosperity: How can heritage foster sustainable economic development and entrepreneurship?

4. Peace: How can heritage build social cohesion, dialogue and understanding, and especially in times of conflict or division?

5. Partnership: How can cross-sectoral collaborations enhance the contribution of cultural heritage to sustainable development

As we work towards the 2030 Agenda, the heritage sector must take a more active role. By recognizing cultural heritage’s contribution to the 5Ps of sustainable development, collaborating across sectors, and integrating heritage into broader policies, we can unlock its full potential for a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future.

We invite you to join us for this important conversation on 31 October, as we explore how heritage can be a catalyst for positive change, both today and for generations to come.
