Sustainability aspiration
The Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina aims to improve the protection and safeguarding of their collections and to further “activate” them as important tools to support learning and educational opportunities for sustainable development while fostering strategic partnerships.
In this OCM field project, the Commission focused on their documentary collections of national monuments, which include books, technical-architectural documentation, geodetic and topographic maps, photographs of monuments, audiovisuals, graphic materials (posters, postcards, etc.), newspaper articles about heritage, academic publications, etc.
These collections were used to organize exhibitions, workshops, and awareness campaigns to support Education for Sustainable Development (EDS). These learning and educational activities also provided opportunities to foster an interdisciplinary professional community committed to working for change and sensitizing decision-makers to create the best conditions for implementing ESD at all levels. Participants included librarians, students, scholars, citizens, and associations.
As a result of this initiative, the collections became made more visible and accessible to users. The digital collections were instrumental in enabling researchers to work on new publications. The project shed new light on the role of the collections in the library as a valuable resource to promote sustainable development. Besides supporting education and research, digital collections were recognized as key enablers of cultural participation and social inclusion. As a result of the project, a decision was made to digitize fragments of national monuments damaged in the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and make them more accessible to the general public.
This field project aligns with the UN Agenda 2030 goals of quality education, innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities (protecting the world’s cultural and natural heritage), and partnerships of the goals.
