Overview of the Functions of the Post

The ICCROM Regional Centre in Sharjah serves as an essential force for cultural heritage education, capacity building, projects and advocacy in the region, leveraging collaboration among professional networks and communities. ICCROM seeks a Director of the Regional Centre in Sharjah to ensure the management and development of the Centre in line with organizational strategic directions and priority areas.

Key Accountabilities

The Director of the ICCROM Regional Centre will manage the Centre and report to the Director-General. The post is based at the ICCROM Regional Centre in Sharjah, UAE. Within delegated authority, the Director of the Regional Centre will be responsible for the following main duties:

  1. Manage and expand the Regional Centre, providing intellectual, strategic and operational management in planning and implementing activities and responding to the priorities and needs of the countries of the Arab Region covered in the Headquarters Agreement.
  2. Manage the programmes and projects carried out by the Regional Centre as foreseen in the Programmes of Activities and Budget to ensure that they are aligned with Member States' needs and represent the most current thinking in all aspects of cultural heritage management.
  3. Ensure that ICCROM remains at the leading edge of new developments, trends and shifts in conservation activities and provides effective thought leadership in cultural heritage management.
  4. Mobilize voluntary contributions in accordance with ICCROM priorities and resource mobilization policies to ensure the Regional Centre's sustainability and growth.
  5. Act as the local focal point for safety and security issues.
  6. As the Head of the ICCROM Regional Centre, coordinate and provide guidance to the work of the Regional Centre colleagues.
  7. Coordinate and evaluate Team performance, ensure an enabling environment, and assist team members in realizing and developing their potential.
  8. Under the guidance of the Director-General, ensure the development of high-level partnerships and collaborations in the Arab region.
  9. Coordinate and collaborate with all Technical colleagues in Headquarters to provide timely technical assistance and respond appropriately to all the requests for capacity building support from countries in the Arab Region.
  10. Collaborate with Finance, Administration, HR and operations colleagues to ensure smooth implementation of activities and operations (e.g. budget reporting, contract management, etc.).
  11. Ensure that the Regional Centre activities are aligned, effective, and that measurable impact is demonstrated through timely reports on project budgets, strategic directions and operations.
  12. Coordinate inputs for the preparation of corporate documents and meetings, including for Governing Bodies meetings.
  13. Under the supervision of the Director-General, represent ICCROM at international conferences, missions, and meetings to enhance its reputation and visibility.

Required qualifications:

Education

  1. Advanced university degree in heritage conservation, heritage studies or related areas; specialization in one or more areas related to architectural and archaeological tangible heritage as an advanced.
  2. Cultural Heritage Management certificates or specializations, are a plus.

Work experience

  1. Minimum of seven (7) years of professional-level experience in international organizations managing and developing innovative heritage conservation and preservation programmes in multicultural and hazardous settings.
  2. Track records in leading and managing international cultural heritage organizations to identify new programmatic orientations and fundraising opportunities.

Skills and knowledge

  1. Knowledge of the cultural dimension in international relations, and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships across a political landscape.
  2. Demonstrated skills in people management in an international and multicultural environment.
  3. Good knowledge of the UN Common System.

Languages

  1. Fluency in English or French, with knowledge of the other and any other language as an advantage. Knowledge of Arabic is a plus.

Remuneration
