È un momento impegnativo per i beni culturali in molti luoghi del Medio Oriente e del Nord Africa, che hanno assistito alla devastazione su larga scala, alla profanazione e alla distruzione di templi, santuari, città e monumenti.
Ora più che mai, è necessario il lavoro dell'ICCROM sulla protezione e la conservazione del patrimonio culturale nelle aree di conflitto. Da quando ha aperto le sue porte nel 2012, l'Ufficio regionale dell'ICCROM a Sharjah (Centro ICCROM-ATHAR), Emirati Arabi Uniti, si è rivelato essenziale per soddisfare il mandato dell'organizzazione nella regione araba, avvicinandosi agli attori e sfruttando i meccanismi di collaborazione regionale e l'impegno della comunità, in una regione in cui sono presenti molti rischi, ma anche notevoli opportunità. La filiale degli Emirati Arabi Uniti è diventata un punto di forza importante per la difesa del patrimonio culturale, fornendo supporto logistico e operativo sostanziale alle attività dell'ICCROM nella regione.
In collaborazione con gli Stati membri arabi, l'ICCROM-ATHAR ambisce a proteggere il patrimonio culturale della regione araba e ad ampliare l'accesso, la valutazione e la comprensione della sua storia. Il Centro focalizza la propria attività sul patrimonio architettonico e archeologico tangibile, tra cui le collezioni del patrimonio e i luoghi storici, i siti e i monumenti. Mira principalmente a migliorare la capacità delle istituzioni ufficiali del patrimonio nella gestione dei siti del patrimonio e delle collezioni museali su base sostenibile e lo fa tramite una serie di attività formative regionali e sul campo, la creazione di capacità e la formazione, la consultazione, la diffusione di informazioni, i convegni, i workshop e i seminari.
La missione dell’ICCROM-ATHAR è generosamente sostenuta da Sua Altezza lo Sceicco Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Membro del Consiglio Supremo ed Emiro di Sharjah, nonché da Stati membri e altri partner.

The publication of this guide follows a two-year capacity-building program in Mosul, Iraq, aimed at developing local expertise for heritage recovery.
