Es una época difícil para el patrimonio cultural en algunas partes de Oriente Medio y África del Norte, que han sufrido una devastación a gran escala, como la profanación y destrucción de templos, santuarios, ciudades y monumentos.

Ahora más que nunca, la labor del ICCROM en materia de protección y preservación del patrimonio cultural en zonas de conflicto es necesaria. Desde que abrió sus puertas en 2012, la Oficina Regional del ICCROM en Sharjah (Centro ICCROM-ATHAR), Emiratos Árabes Unidos, ha demostrado ser vital para el cumplimiento del mandato de la organización en la región árabe al estar más cerca de las partes interesadas y aprovechar los mecanismos de colaboración regional y la participación de la comunidad en una región de muchos riesgos, pero también de oportunidades considerables. La oficina general en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos se ha convertido en una fuerza importante para la promoción del patrimonio cultural, proporcionando un apoyo logístico y operativo sustantivo a la labor del ICCROM en la región.

En colaboración con los Estados Miembros árabes, el ICCROM-ATHAR aspira a proteger el patrimonio cultural de la región árabe y a ampliar el acceso, la apreciación y la comprensión de su historia. El Centro se centra en el patrimonio material arquitectónico y arqueológico, incluidas las colecciones patrimoniales y los lugares, sitios y monumentos históricos. Su objetivo principal es mejorar la capacidad de las instituciones oficiales del patrimonio para gestionar los sitios del patrimonio y las colecciones de los museos de forma sostenible. Para ello, lleva a cabo una serie de actividades regionales de educación y sobre el terreno, capacitación y formación, consultas, difusión de información, simposios, talleres y seminarios.

La misión del ICCROM-ATHAR cuenta con el generoso apoyo de su alteza el Jeque Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, miembro del Consejo Supremo y Gobernante de Sharjah, así como de los Estados Miembros y otros asociados.
