How does the passage of time transform the cultural value of a material object? Do objects gain—or lose—purpose or meaning? The artist and preservationist Jorge Otero-Pailos (2022 Resident), the Princeton University classicist Caroline Cheung (2017 Fellow), and the artist and professor Karyn Olivier (2019 Fellow) will explore the theme of afterlives in the context of their work, moderated by AAR President Peter N. Miller. Bringing together visual arts, historic preservation, and archaeology, this panel will shed light on the constantly changing nature of what surrounds us.
