Executive Summary
The fifth training course on Impact Assessments for Heritage (IAH) was developed by WHITRAP and ICCROM with the support of IUCN, the Leadership Training Centre of Urban-Rural Development of Tongji University, Tongji University, Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute, and Zhenze Town Government.
The course put equal emphasis on theoretical and practical aspects to help participants understand the significance of impact assessments in the heritage planning and management process. It also stressed the links between culture and nature.
Trainees were taught about all forms of impact assessment, including Heritage Impact Assessments (HIA), Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA), and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). Relevant legislation was also discussed, and the legal framework of IAH introduced to enable participants to seek the possibility of creating a better heritage management and monitoring system.
To better achieve the above-mentioned objectives, the overall structure of the course consisted of three parts: lectures, presentations, and exercises on IAH for two proposed projects in Zhenze Town.
