ICCROM’s multi-partner capacity development in Ukraine – A global coalition for concerted action
Since the outbreak of armed conflict, Ukraine has faced not only a humanitarian, environmental and economic crisis but also a cultural crisis, with hundreds of cultural heritage sites damaged.
In response to the urgent need to safeguard cultural heritage in Ukraine, ICCROM’s FAR programme – in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine (MoCIP), the Maidan Museum, the Heritage Emergency Response Initiative (HERI), the Agency for Cultural Resilience (ACURE) and our local alumni network – is strengthening capacities to build long-term resilience and promoting early recovery for heritage and associated communities.
With multilateral support from the US Department of State’s Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), UNESCO and the European Commission’s Directorate-General of Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, our FAR programme launched three capacity-development projects in 2023.
"The protection and preservation of our historical memory and cultural identity is not only the responsibility of the cultural sector ... Currently, we are developing capabilities in this in the field of our colleagues with the hope that we will form a national team of cultural first aiders from motivated and trained Ukrainians.”
– Ihor Poshyvailo, General Director of the Maidan Museum, co-organizer of the Heritage Emergency Response Initiative (HERI)
