On 3 February 2025, ICCROM’s Director-General, Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral, welcomed H.E. Mrs. Lina Annab, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan, to discuss strengthening the long-standing partnership between ICCROM and Jordan. As a Member State since 1958, Jordan has worked closely with ICCROM since its inception on cultural heritage management and capacity-building initiatives.
The meeting underscored the vital role of culture in addressing global challenges, particularly on climate action, socio-economic development, and community resilience. It also highlighted the importance of inter-ministerial dialogue and cross-sectoral cooperation to ensure culture remains a priority on the global agenda.
Key topics included cultural heritage’s role in sustainability, such as managing disaster risks, strengthening technical training, integrating culture into policymaking, promoting heritage-based livelihoods, and innovative methodologies for urban and built heritage conservation.
In recent years, ICCROM has supported Jordan through various initiatives, such as the Disaster Risk Management Course for heritage sites (2023), advising on Petra’s disaster risk management plan (2018), and through various editions of the MOSAIKON courses for mosaic conservation.
During the meeting, ICCROM shared archival materials, including videos, photos, and photogrammetric drawings of past technical missions and capacity-building activities in Jordan (Teleilat el-Ghassul site, Petra, Umayyad Palace in the citadel of Amman, Umm al-Rasas site, among others). These resources serve as valuable case studies and technical references for future collaborations on digital heritage and innovative conservation techniques.
We thank H.E. Mrs. Lina Annab, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan, for visiting us and look forward to continued collaborations. This meeting reaffirmed ICCROM’s commitment to supporting Jordan in safeguarding its heritage.
