Disaster Risk Management is crucial for safeguarding cultural heritage from natural hazards and emergencies, including armed conflict. ICCROM continues to strengthen global capacities in this area by expanding its portfolio of training opportunities.

Integrating DRM into World Heritage Management: Using Disaster Risk Management to Improve Management Plans

5 to 16 May 2025. Course sessions will take place online on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (10:00-13:00 CET).   

Target Audience

Applications are open to professionals worldwide, specifically targeting:   

  • Practitioners working at cultural,natural and mixed World Heritage properties or other heritage sites.   
  • Individuals working in institutions responsible for managing World Heritage properties or heritage places.   
  • Individuals working in disaster management, climate action, and civil defence institutions.   
  • Policymakers, representatives of institutions, NGOs, charities, local associations, and community groups involved in heritage conservation and management.

When & where

The course runs from May 2025 to February 2026 in four phases: online sessions (May–June 2025), in-person training in Riga, Latvia (July 2025), post-training field projects (Aug 2025–Feb 2026), and an online dissemination meeting (TBD). 

Target Audience: open exclusively to professionals from countries participating in the Creative Europe Programme, including: 

  • Professionals working to safeguard living traditions, knowledge, and practices, as well as heritage collections in diverse settings (museums, libraries, archives, archaeological or living heritage sites). 
  • Cultural bearers and community leaders who are committed to safeguarding at-risk movable and living heritage. 
  • Professionals working in fields such as civil protection, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, fire risk management, and emergency response.

Organizers: ICCROM in partnership with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC). This initiative is funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe Programme.   

The training is being developed in collaboration with 13+ technical partners from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Ukraine. Aligned with the principles of ICCROM and our funding partner, the READY project is committed to inclusivity and celebrating Europe’s diversity. We continue to expand our network to ensure a truly representative and collaborative European initiative. 

Course Fee: Fully funded, with no participation fee. All expenses related to travel and accommodation for the in-person training component will be covered by ICCROM.

Target Audience: open to professionals worldwide, including:   

  • Professionals and institutions working in areas affected by conflict and/or disasters, or organizations dealing with the impact of such crises on heritage.   
  • Individuals involved in heritage-related activities and post-crisis recovery.

Nantucket Course

When & where

29 September 2025-26 October 2025. Nantucket, USA 

Target Audience: open to professionals worldwide, including:

  • The course will host up to 12 mid-career professionals working in heritage, disaster risk management, and the environmental field.  
  • Each participant should be involved with an impacted cultural site, which will factor into the selection process. Their work will be integrated into the course, allowing them to share and refine their approaches to assessment and solutions throughout the programme.
