The deliberate destruction of cultural heritage has become a core feature of modern conflicts and a tactic of war. In this scenario, safeguarding the world’s cultural heritage is becoming increasingly urgent and imperative. At stake is people’s very identity – their sense of being, their culture, history, collective memory and future legacy.

Abdallah Hamad Muhareb (1946-2017)

Dr Abdallah Hamad Muhareb, Director General of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), passed away on Thurs 4 May. He was 71 years old.

Agreement between Italy and UNESCO – 60th anniversary

The 27th of April marks the 60th anniversary of the signature of the Agreement between Italy and UNESCO regulating the establishment and legal status of ICCROM on the Italian territory. This signing ceremony took place in Paris on 27 April 1957.

On 9 and 10 May, a series of events will be held at the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR) in Rome.
