FOLD&R online publication

ICCROM and the International Association for Classical Archaeology (AIAC) are pleased to announce the launch of Fasti Online Archaeological Conservation, an international database of archaeological conservation projects, and its associated peer reviewed, open access journal, Fasti Online Documents & Research, Archaeological Conservation (FOLD&R AC).

Within its mandate to preserve cultural heritage, ICCROM places significant emphasis on risk management and the dissemination of knowledge. Knowledge about a monument, place or collection of objects is inseparable from its conservation. This becomes especially crucial as we witness events that are endangering our heritage. It is with this in mind that we have embarked on a project which aims to facilitate information exchange between heritage professionals that is free and high quality.

ICCROM’s work over the years has included the forging of strategic partnerships in order to develop tools that can facilitate conservation decision-making and the protocols necessary to carry out interventions. In this context, ICCROM and the AIAC have built upon the success of the existing Fasti Online, a database for archaeological excavations and research that was established in 2000.

The topics covered by our new journal, FOLD&R AC, include research in progress on archaeological conservation, and in particular all of the subjects relating to the conservation of archaeological objects and monuments, the use of sites and archaeological collections.

We welcome in the first instance simple records of all conservation activities. These will be georeferenced onto a map which constitutes the home page of the site, and translated in to English. They will be displayed in both the national language and English. These records can be accompanied by longer article, written in English, or in the national language of the author. In the latter case, they must be accompanied by an abstract in English. All articles will be peer-reviewed for publication in FOLD&R AC by two members of a panel of reviewers.

The Fasti Online database was created by LP Archaeology and is supported by the European project ARIADNE. The new online journal, registered as ISSN 2412-5229, is co-directed by Elizabeth Fentress for AIAC, and Stefano De Caro for ICCROM.

No compensation is foreseen for authors and scientific collaborators. The costs of the journal, in comparison with analogous publications or private initiatives, will be covered, we hope, by contributions from specific institutions and with specific agreements. We will pursue an enlargement of the founding institutes in order to amplify our range of action and ensure the new journal’s sustainability.
