Paper and Water: A Guide for Conservators, the handbook published by Gerhard Banik and Irene Brückle in 2011, after a decade of close cooperation with ICCROM, has been re-published under the title Papier und Wasser – Ein Lehrbuch für Restauratoren, Konservierungswissenschaftler und Papiermacher. The handbook, which was honoured with an Institute for Conservation award in 2013, has also been made available on the publisher’s (Anton Siegl) website.
The nearly 700-page German-language edition of the handbook is a translation of the revised second English edition, which itself will be released shortly by Taylor & Francis. The German version has been published with minor modifications including an update of the bibliographic references of the individual chapters, and the annexes and the German and English glossary of terminology have been amplified and revised. Moreover, a chapter by Ute Henniges and Antje Potthast has been added in which the possibilities and limitations of analytical characterization of cellulose and paper are presented and the informative value of the single methods are explained in detail. Videos and animated illustrations are contained on a CD included with the book.
The German edition of the handbook represents the culmination of a decade long project. In addition to ICCROM, and the authors Banik and Brückle, the project also brought together the International Association of Book and Paper Conservators (IADA), the Institute of Paper Conservation (IPC) and the financial support of the European Commission.
