Background

The National Cultural Heritage Administration, in collaboration with ICCROM, the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, and the Three Gorges Museum, is pleased to announce the course on Collection Management and Crisis Preparedness course. This course is designed to equip professionals working in museums and collection-based institutions with tools, methodologies, and an overview of practices in the management and conservation of collections. The course will explore essential strategies for effectively responding to emergencies, ensuring the protection and preservation of cultural heritage during crises, and how new technologies can be integrated into this framework.

Course Objectives

The course is designed to provide participants with the current thinking, trends and approaches to museum management, both from the international and Chinese perspective. It will cover key topics such as:

  • Museum management and conservation concepts
  • Crisis and climate change in museums and collections 
  • Preventive conservation and risk management
  • Digital heritage and digital tools for collections care.

Methodology

The course will combine lectures, group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises to ensure high-level interaction. Participants will have the opportunity to present and discuss case studies from their own contexts, creating a collaborative learning environment.

Participants

This course is intended for up to 35 participants: 5 from China and 30 from international locations. Professionals engaged in heritage conservation and management are encouraged to apply. This includes conservators, curators, restorers, designers, historians, archaeologists, scientists, and other individuals actively involved in conservation work within museums or collection-based institutions.

Teaching Team

A diverse group of experts from China and abroad will teach the course.

Travel, Accommodation, and Expenses

Participants are responsible for their travel expenses to and from Chongqing, China. However, a limited number of travel grants may be available. Local transportation, accommodation, and meals during the course will be provided.

Application Process

International applicants should complete the application form and submit it along with a 500-word summary of their experience in heritage site protection and how the course aligns with their current or future projects. 

Chinese applicants will apply through the China Academy of Cultural Heritage.

To be considered for the selection process, applications must be received by ICCROM no later than August 30, 2024, to be considered for the selection process.
