CALL FOR APPLICATION DOCU25
Documenting layered Heritage Workshop
The workshop on documenting layered heritage in Rome, jointly organized by the School of Architecture of Notre Dame and ICCROM, combines hand drawings with digital techniques to better understand historic building methods for informed conservation decisions.
Methodology
The workshop will begin with introductory lectures, providing participants with a foundation in both traditional and digital documentation methods. Onsite activities will follow a mixed-method approach, combining digital tools—such as laser scanning, photogrammetry, and LiDAR—with hand-drawn documentation. These drawings will emphasize materials, construction techniques, and building phases, aiming to connect individual elements to the overall structure. All documentation will be contextualized within the broader framework of Roman construction practices.
Participants are expected to produce a final output consisting of a hand drawing accompanied by a description of materials, construction techniques, and key observations made during the documentation process. The workshop will conclude with participant presentations and a seminar featuring international experts, where a draft document outlining best practices for using new technologies in heritage documentation will be developed with contributions from participants' firsthand experiences.
Participants
We are seeking a maximum of ten young and mid-career heritage conservation professionals from disciplines (architects, archaeologists, engineers, planners, site managers, etc.). Candidates should have the ability to influence or show potential to influence practices in the field. Participants should be able to work primarily on-site for at least six hours per day in the open and demonstrate some hand drawing skills.
Teaching team
The teaching team is composed of recognized heritage conservation professionals who have theoretical knowledge and practical experience, and are very engaged in training. They share the broadest possible international perspectives in their fields of expertise, and at the same time bring specific knowledge to fulfil the aims and objectives of the workshop.
Language
English is the working language of the course. Candidates must have strong communication and writing skills in English.
