Introduction to Documentation and Conservation of Built Heritage in the Arab Region

Under the Patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah (ICCROM-ATHAR) is offering an introductory course programme composed of five course modules on: “Introduction to Documentation and Conservation of Built Heritage in the Arab Region”. This programme focuses on the professional development of those institutions and individuals whose task it is to look after cultural heritage. These one-week training modules will address the following areas:

  1. Introduction to Architectural Documentation for Built Heritage
  2. Introduction to Conservation of Stone and Mortar
  3. Introduction to Structural Conservation
  4. Principles of Conservation in the Management of Historic Sites
  5. Introduction to Conservation of Earthen Architecture

ICCROM-ATHAR is committed to the safeguarding of cultural heritage in the Arab region, for the benefit of local societies, individual countries and the region as a whole through the dissemination of the best practices in heritage conservation and management.

** Attendance on three of the five modules is mandatory in order to obtain the course certificate for this introductive course programme of ICCROM-ATHAR.

Module fees for the three modules will be of 1600 US Dollars.

1- INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DOCUMENTATION FOR BUILT HERITAGE

Dates: 21-25 May 2017

Background and Aims

The “Introduction to Architectural Documentation for Cultural Heritage” module of the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah aims at sharing applied knowledge in architectural records for conservation in the Arab region, providing the basic understanding of how to make and manage documentation, as well as the hands-on experience that will help participants make informed decisions that ensure the protection of cultural heritage sites.

 

Module Objectives and Expected Results

The module consists of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical. Study visits and applied work on sites will complement the work carried out in the classroom. The module aims at introducing the following topics:

  • concepts of documentation and information gathering, recording and heritage information management;
  • activities, methodologies and tools for recording, documentation, inventories and information management;
  • addressing recording practice based on specific case studies;
  • topography, photogrammetry, and 3D scanning techniques.

 

** (Participants are required to bring their own cameras if they choose to participate in this module.)

2- INTRODUCTION TO CONSERVATION OF STONE AND MORTAR

Dates: 10-14 September 2017

Background and Aims

The “Conservation of Stone and Mortar” module of the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah aims at establishing and developing professional qualifications by building the capacity of conservation professionals in the Arab Region in the field of Cultural Heritage conservation and development with a specific focus to traditional materials in masonry.

 

Module Objectives and Expected Results

The module consists of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical. Study visits and applied work on sites will complement the work carried out in the classroom. By the end of the module, participants will have:

  • familiarized themselves with the traditional materials in stone and mortar structures used in the region understanding their characteristics and material behaviour;
  • understood the mechanical and chemical processes of deterioration;
  • identified priorities and pathologies for appropriate conservation and treatment interventions of masonry.

3- INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL CONSERVATION

Dates: 1-5 October 2017

Background and Aims

Structural problems are considered to be one of the most important challenges faced when working in the preservation of historic buildings. The stabilization of these buildings is the very first step, before any further interventions are implemented. In parallel with the development of the structural design and the analysis of modern building techniques, the knowledge to understand and analyse the stability of historic buildings has also evolved. To this end, ICCROM-ATHAR has decided to develop a module that introduces key methodologies for structural conservation of historic buildings.  The module is tailored for structural engineers and architects working in the preservation of historic buildings who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in the analysis of structural conservation, as well as for site managers who want to understand the nature of the structural problems of their sites in order to appropriately evaluate structural interventions.

Module Objectives and Expected Results

The module consists of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical. Study visits and applied work on sites will complement the work carried out in the classroom. This module aims at introducing the following topics:

  • History of building techniques and structural behaviour of historic buildings: Main characteristics and construction materials used in the course of history are analysed. The structural behaviour of historic buildings is studied through a series of commented examples. The particular behaviour of masonry structures is especially analysed.
  • Preliminary analysis: This section of the module will look at how to read the stability of historic buildings, assessing construction defects and damage. Participants will also explore how to write a preliminary structural assessment report.
  • Investigations and structural analysis: Participants will examine the materials used in the construction of a building (studying samples, performing soundings, etc.) and will use modern techniques for testing the structures. After that, participants will discuss existing conditions and look into structural modelling using appropriate techniques in order to understand the behaviour and distribution of stresses in the structure.
  • Temporary shoring and monitoring: Participants will explore the designs for the temporary consolidation of structures using appropriate materials, including how to secure a building, the security of workers, and the installation of monitoring equipment.
  • Structural conservation project design and modelling: Participants will be introduced to: the development of structural conservation projects aiming to save a building in the long term, using appropriate materials, principles of consolidation, methods of execution and material properties; the use of appropriate programs in order to understand the behaviour and the distribution of stresses in the building after the proposed intervention.

4- PRINCIPLES OF CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF HISTORIC SITES

Dates: 08– 12 October 2017

The “Principles of Conservation in the Management of Historic Sites” module of the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah aims at establishing and developing professional qualifications by building the capacity of conservation professionals in the Arab Region in the field of cultural heritage conservation and development with a specific focus on conservation and management of historic cities.

Module Objectives and Expected Results

The module consists of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical. Study visits and applied work on sites will complement the work carried out in the classroom. By the end of the module, participants will have:

  • understood how to devise cultural heritage significance statements;
  • learnt to assess cultural heritage significance, thus understanding and explaining the cultural heritage significance of a place, before making management decisions;
  • familiarized themselves with how to identify threats, operational and legal requirements needed in order to anticipate future circumstances required to develop a good site management plan;
  • learnt to develop conservation policies and priorities;
  • developed an action plan.

5- CONSERVATION OF EARTHEN ARCHITECTURE

Dates: 5 – 9 November 2017

Background and Aims

The “Conservation of Earthen Architecture “module of the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah aims to develop appropriate methods and techniques for improving the sustainability of the conservation and the management of the different types of earthen architectural heritage in the Arab region, as well as to ensure that best practices are broadly disseminated for practical application on earthen structures.

Module Objectives and Expected Results

By the end of module, participants will have:

  • Familiarized themselves with the traditional materials in earthen structures used in the region, acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses (this includes methods of recognition for the identification of traditional means of water protection);
  • Identified deteriorating processes in earthen architecture, recognizing priorities for appropriate structural conservation and treatment interventions, including surface interventions;
  • Examined different risk management aspects in the field of earthen architecture conservation, so becoming able to develop risk management plans.

Participants and Admission

The module is intended for 15 – 20 heritage professionals working in the Arab states, including archaeologists, architects, art historians, collections and site managers, conservators-restorers, conservation scientists, curators, directors of museums, gallery and archive professionals, etc. Admission to the module will be subject to selection criteria including:

  1. Professional background: at least a Bachelor degree in a relevant field of study.
  2. Letter of intent: candidates are requested to provide a letter stating clearly the reasons for applying to the module, what they hope to learn from it, and how it will benefit them and their institution, country, or future employer.
  3. Employment: priority is given to professionals affiliated with institutions working in relevant fields.
  4. Work experience: those who have already gained at least two years of practical or research experience in the field will have priority.
  1. Insurance: All participants should also have health and accident insurance. Upon selection, they should return to ICCROM a signed medical and accident participant’s release form.
  2. Working languages: The main working language will be in Arabic. Proficiency of English and/or French will be an asset, particularly to communicate with international teaching team and to be able to pursue research work and reading of reference materials.
  3. Financial Resources / Support: A request for financial support should be indicated in the application form. ICCROM-ATHAR will provide a few scholarships (subject to evaluation), to cover accommodation, meals and travel for the duration of the course.
